Club Meeting - Life beyond the Postcard: Every Sight Is Jacob's Ladder by Lawrence Russ

In his program for the CT Valley Camera Club, "Life beyond the Postcard, or Every Sight Is Jacob's Ladder," Lawrence Russ will show images from two of his series, "At the Edge of the Sea" and "The Ruler of Shadows." He will use them to help in talking about how his experience with other arts, and his concerns with matters not-strictly-photographic inform his practice and purpose as a fine art photographer. He will talk about such things as why a cliché is harmful, how we confuse the different uses of photography, how photography can help or hurt us and our viewers, and how photographs can show us what lives beyond the conventions that block our vision.

Lawrence Russ's photographs have been selected for various prestigious exhibitions, such as the Art of the Northeast (in 2004, 2005 and 2007) of the Silvermine Guild Arts Center, the SPECTRA National Photography Triennial (for which he gave the gallery talk in 2005), and Images. He was given the First Honorable Mention in the regional Annual Open Juried Show of the Housatonic Museum of Art, by juror Judy Kim, the Curator of Exhibitions for the American Federation of the Arts, and has received First or Second Prizes in other exhibitions. Russ has also published poems, essays, and reviews in numerous national books, magazines, and anthologies, including the catalogue for the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum's exhibition, Art at the Edge of the Law; Parabola: A Journal of Myth and Tradition; The Nation; OMNI; New York Quarterly; and Images: A Journal of the Arts and Religion.
